A timing belt’s function is to control the timing of the engine valves. The timing belt a.k.a. cam belt is the most common used today and replaces the older timing chain. However, there are still some vehicles today that utilize a timing chain.
The timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s) which in turn controls the opening and closing of the engine valves. Additionally, the timing belt may drive other engine parts such as the water pump. While the serpentine belt in the car is typically easily visible, the timing belt / chain typically has a cover of some sort that must be removed for replacement or inspection.
